The Gruppo Archeologico Krotoniate (GAK) continues its Corso di Archeologia e Storia 2026 with a lecture of great interest.
On Thursday 21st of May 2026, Giovanni Maria Arone will deliver a talk entitled “Pythagoreanism and Eastern Religions”, exploring the possible contacts and the profound affinities between the Pythagorean school of Crotone and the ancient philosophical-religious traditions of the East.
Presentation of the speaker. The figure of Pythagoras and his school remains shrouded in mystery: few direct sources, initiatory practices reserved for initiates, doctrines transmitted orally. Yet it is precisely this aura of secrecy that has made it possible, throughout the centuries, to associate Pythagoreanism with Eastern traditions rich in texts and testimonies. The lecture will analyse significant parallels concerning metempsychosis, cosmic harmony, ascetic practices, purification of the soul and the conception of the divine, with particular attention to Upanishadic philosophy (such as the Kena Upanishad).
Who is Giovanni Maria Arone. An independent researcher, scholar of ancient esoteric traditions and author of philosophical essays, including Katábasis. Promemoria di una scissione e di una ricomposizione orfico-pitagorica (Kairòs, 2016). For years he has studied Pythagorean thought and the mystical currents of Magna Graecia, with particular attention to the dialogues between the West and the ancient East.
Participation details. The meeting is open to the public and free of charge. It is especially intended for scholars, enthusiasts of ancient history, tourist guides, students and citizens interested in the great cultural heritage of Crotone.
