"Before becoming famous for its majestic temples, ancient Poseidonia (the Greek name of Paestum) was known throughout the ancient world for a “miracle” of nature: its roses.
Poets such as Virgil and Ovid sang of the “bifera rosaria Paesti,” meaning the roses that had the extraordinary ability to bloom twice a year, in May and November. They were highly fragrant and rare flowers, sought after by the entire Roman aristocracy for banquets and the finest perfumes.
Walking today among the temples means stepping on the same land that, thousands of years ago, was an immense fragrant garden overlooking the sea."
